Folk art Wedding Chest, anno 1797

A pine wedding chest from Central Europe, probably German, dated 1797. The Neoclassical style persisted in Europe until after the 1820s. This color scheme of terracotta red and earthy blue is typical of the style and is often seen in Swedish and German painted furniture and harkens back to classical times.
The flowers and the garland or wreath that decorate the coffin are symbols of eternal life. In the Christian symbolism of the rural people of Central Europe, the moment of marriage was a holy sacrament marriage, the bride to eternal life.
The truck has its original lock, handles and hinges.
